Delhi Welcomes Its Fourth Woman Chief Minister: Rekha Gupta
February 20, 2025: Rekha Gupta is the new CM of Delhi. A huge crowd of BJP supporters and her family gathered outside her Shalimar Bagh residence to celebrate. Drums and slogans filled the air “Sabko dekha, aa gayi Rekha” (we have seen everyone, now Rekha has arrived) and “Jai Shri Ram”
Inside the house, Rekha Gupta’s husband Manish Gupta, a businessman, reiterated, “I am very happy and can’t wait to support my wife”. Meanwhile her mother-in-law Meera Gupta distributed sweets to the guests and said, “Whatever AAP couldn’t do, she will. She is a wonderful daughter-in-law and will be a great CM”
A Journey of Dedication and Experience
Rekha Gupta, the first time MLA for Shalimar Bagh is going to be the 4th woman Chief Minister of Delhi. Her appointment was done in a meeting of the BJP legislature party and she will take oath on Thursday afternoon. She will be the only woman Chief Minister in any state or Union Territory ruled by BJP.
Rekha Gupta was born in Nandgarh village in Jind district of Haryana and shifted to Delhi with her family when she was just 2 years old. Her father was in State Bank of India and taught her the importance of hard work and dedication. Rekha’s political career started in 1993 when she joined Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), a student organization of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). She was general secretary of Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) from 1995 to 1996 and then president from 1996 to 1997. Rekha did her Bachelor’s in Commerce and Master’s in Management and Arts from University of Delhi.

In 2002 Rekha joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and rose rapidly in the party. She became the Secretary of the BJP’s Youth Wing in Delhi and later the National Secretary of Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha till 2005. Throughout her party tenure she held various positions including General Secretary of Delhi BJP’s Mahila Morcha and National Vice Chairman of BJP Mahila Morcha.
Electoral Challenges and Triumphs
Rekha entered into electoral politics in 2007 when she won the MCD election from North Pitampura ward. She became the Chairperson of Women and Child Development Committee and was re-elected in 2012. During her second term she was the Vice Chairperson of the Standing Committee which is the main finance committee of the MCD. Also from 2012-2013 she was the Chairperson of Education Secretary of New Delhi Municipal Council.
In 2015 she contested for Delhi Assembly but lost to AAP’s Bandana Kumari by 10,978 votes. In 2020 she faced Kumari again and lost but this time by 3,440 votes. In 2022 she bounced back by winning MCD elections in Shalimar Bagh ward. She contested as BJP candidate for mayor but lost to AAP’s Shelly Oberoi. In 2025 Assembly elections she contested against Bandana Kumari again and this time won by a big margin of 29,595 votes.
Personal Life and Community Engagement
Rekha Gupta is a mother of two. Her daughter is studying post-graduation in Australia and her son is in final year of engineering in Vellore, Tamil Nadu. She has lot of political experience and is committed to public service which has earned her respect from others. Raja Iqbal Singh, MCD Leader of Opposition said, “She has been in politics for many years. She listens to people and has lot of experience.”
Saraswati Vihar councillor Shikha Bharadwaj praised Gupta’s skills in managing things, saying, “She is a good administrator, friendly, and bold. She understands the problems people in Delhi face and knows how to fix them.”
As Rekha Gupta gets ready to become Chief Minister, many people are hopeful that her leadership will bring positive changes to Delhi, helping to solve the challenges residents face and keeping the promises she made during her campaign.
