Rohit Sharma Addresses Retirement Speculations After Leading India to Champions Trophy 2025 Victory
After India's impressive win against New Zealand in the Champions Trophy 2025 final, Rohit Sharma has finally put to rest the rumors about his ODI future. The match in Dubai was won by four wickets and was a big deal for the team and the captain.
As Rohit turns 38 in two months, there was a lot of talk about him retiring from ODIs especially with the next big ODI tournament, the 2027 World Cup, around the corner. But during the post match press conference, Rohit clarified that he has no plans to retire from the format.
“I am not going to retire from this format. Just to make sure no rumors are spread moving forward. Koi future plan hai nahi, jo chal raha hai chalega (there is no future plan, whatever is going on will continue as it is)” said Rohit, putting an end to all speculations about his future with the team.
Rohit stressed on the hunger and passion drive in the team, "There is a lot of hunger even in guys who have played a lot of cricket, and it rubs off on even the younger guys. We have 5-6 guys who are big players, so it makes life easy for all of us".
In the final match Rohit scored 76 off 83 balls with 7 fours and 3 sixes. This was his first ever 50 in an ICC final, so he proved he can do it under pressure. He was aggressive from the start and set the tone for the chase. He scored at 91.56 and was the key to India's win.
In his career he has played 9 ICC finals and has scored 322 runs in 11 innings at an average of 32.20 with one fifty and a best of 76. He is now among the elite company of Sourav Ganguly, Sanath Jayasuriya and Hansie Cronje to score over 50 in an ICC Champions Trophy final.
Rohit’s 76 in the final was his highest score in an international final surpassing his previous best of 66 which he scored against Australia in the Commonwealth Bank Series final in 2008. This is a big plus for him as a player and reiterates his importance in Indian cricket.
As the cricketing world celebrates India’s Champions Trophy win Rohit has assured fans and teammates that he is committed to ODIs.
