Good news for Kdrama fans! Choi Woo-shik who starred in the Oscar winning film Parasite is now the lead in a new Netflix series that’s getting so popular. Netflix has a wide range of international content but their Korean content has been doing so well globally. In fact Squid Game season 1 is the most watched season of any show on the platform across all languages and season 2 is 3rd only behind Wednesday season 1. Other popular Korean shows are All of Us Are Dead and Hellbound.

Choi Woo-shik, who was fantastic as Kim Ki-woo in Parasite, has a long list of other films and dramas under his belt. He was in Train to Busan as the baseball player Min Yong-guk, Our Beloved Summer as the lovely illustrator Choi Ung, and A Killer Paradox as the college student Lee Tang.

Melo Movie: A New Netflix Sensation

His latest venture, the romcom series Melo Movie, is a big hit on Netflix worldwide. The series is written by Lee Na-eun, who also wrote Our Beloved Summer, and directed by Oh Chung-hwan, who directed The Doctors and Big Mouth. Choi Woo-shik plays Ko Gyeom, a film enthusiast who goes from being an extra to a film critic. He crosses paths with Kim Mu-bee, a reluctant director played by Park Bo-young (Strong Girl Bong-soon). They fall in love, break up, and only to find themselves as neighbors years later and rekindle their romance.

Melo Movie also has a great supporting cast, Lee Jun-young from May I Help You? and Jeon So-nee from Encounter.

Chart Performance and Viewer Reception

According to the latest numbers from Netflix, Melo Movie has entered at No. 4 on the Top 10 chart for non-English TV shows for the week of Feb 17-23. It got 3.2 million viewers and 32.5 million viewing hours. It’s behind Dog Days Out at No. 3, The Åre Murders at No. 2 and Cassandra at No. 1.

Melo Movie is trending in 27 countries in the Americas and Asia, including Brazil, Peru, Venezuela, Bangladesh, Vietnam and Taiwan. It’s No. 1 in South Korea and Indonesia.

Future Prospects for Melo Movie

While the debut is good, the longevity of Melo Movie is yet to be seen. It can leverage Choi Woo-shik’s star power and its 7.2/10 IMDb rating to become a word of mouth phenomenon. If it can stay on the chart for several weeks or even climb up, there’s a good chance Netflix will consider renewing it for season 2. As more and more people discover and engage with the series, Melo Movie can cement its place as one of the beloved shows in Netflix’s Korean drama library.

Be Happy Movie Review: A Missed Opportunity in Execution

“Be Happy” starring Abhishek Bachchan and Nora Fatehi tries to spin a warm tale of dreams, dance and determination but falls flat due to its poor execution. The premise is good but the film doesn’t go into the emotional lives of the characters instead it prioritizes dance sequences and competition like a reality show.
