Joe Goldberg's Final Chapter: A Glimpse into You Season 5 Trailer
Big news! Netflix has dropped the trailer for the fifth and final season of You and it’s Joe Goldberg time again! Penn Badgley is back as the enigmatic Joe and the trailer shows him returning to New York City where he’s a notorious figure that the city never forgets.
After four seasons of chaos, Joe is back in New York and back in familiar yet complicated terrain. The trailer hints at a big development: Joe is going to reopen Mooney’s, the bookstore where he worked in Season 1. The nostalgia of him returning to his roots is contrasted with the introduction of new characters: free-spirited playwright Bronte and twin sisters Raegan and Maddie Lockwood, played by Madeline Brewer, Anna Camp and Griffin Matthews respectively.
Created by Greg Berlanti and Sera Gamble based on the books by Caroline Kepnes. Season 5 kicks off three years after the events of Season 4 which ended with Joe and Kate leaving London for the bright lights of New York City. The logline for the season is: “Joe has it all: a loving wife, his precocious son back in his arms, a spotless reputation and money – lots of it. But the pull of his darkness and his past violence is going to unravel it all as the season builds to a big finish.”
Joe Goldberg's Newfound Fame
Unlike previous seasons where Joe was operating in the dark, this season is different. Joe is a celebrity now, and is affectionately referred to as “Prince Charming” by the public and the media. Co-showrunner and executive producer Justin W. Lo says, “One of the most fun things about this season is the Prince Charming aspect, now that Joe is famous. Now that he is known in New York, social media is on him. That’s fun for us to play with.” This new development for Joe adds a whole new layer to his character as he navigates the pitfalls of fame and his darker impulses.
With his new money, Joe is struggling with his identity and morality. Badgley says, “Joe doesn’t feel good about anything really. He’s trying to stomach being one of the 0.01%, a billionaire, which is extraordinary. He’s fooling himself, but he’s doing a pretty good job, as he always does. He thinks he’s changed so that it can be enough for him.”
A Bittersweet Farewell
As the series wraps up, Badgley talks about saying goodbye to Joe Goldberg. With just about 7 years in the role he’s got a mix of emotions. “It’s bittersweet, everything is. It’s probably a lot sweeter than it is bitter,” he says. “You’re in this same space and doing this same work for almost 7 years and you love it but you’re happy to be done. It’s time for him to rest, to stop, to put that knife down.”
Fans can tune in for the final installment of Joe’s story when You returns on Netflix on April 24, 2025. The trailer promises a wild ride as Joe navigates fame, family and his past.
